Artificial Turf Installation Guidelines

Proper installation and maintenance are essential for maximizing the lifespan of artificial turf and keeping it looking its best.

STEP 1 - PLAN

Always take the time to plan and prepare for your artificial grass installation.

  • Start by choosing the right artificial turf to suit your application
  • Measure and map out your yard to determine a layout that minimizes waste and reduce seaming.  Artificial Turf is sold in 15 foot widths and you will want to install it with the blades in the same direction.
    • To determine how many linear feet you need, divide the total square feet by 15
  • Weed barrier - estimate 10%-20% more than project size to allow overlap of sections
  • Infill - Determine the amount and type of infill needed.  Use a minimum 1-2 LBS of infill per square foot of artificial turf
  • Seaming Fabric - Determine the amount of seaming fabric needed if applicable
  • Seaming Glue - (28oz covers 25LF +/-)
  • Determine number of pins needed (aim to pin every 3-4")
    •  Total SF/50% = # of pins

STEP 2 - SITE PREPARATION

  • Start with a clean surface by removing any existing sod, weeds, plants etc.  Remove any large or sharp rocks.
  • Build a base with 4-6 inches of 3/4" fine crushed gravel to create sufficient drainage. Rake out the base to even out any high or low spots.  A smooth base will result in a better looking installation
  • Use a plate compactor to smooth over the entire surface
  • Use marking paint to mark your install area and where any seams will land

STEP 3 - ROLLING AND CUTTING

  • Edges need to be trimmed carefully for seaming (and boarder edges)
  • Roll out the turf and cut it as per your plan.
    • Aim to cut the backing without cutting the blades (as this will result in a more natural look at seams and boarders)
    • Remove any factory edges - you do not want to use a factory edge for a seam
    • Double check that the turf blades are going in the same direction

STEP 4 - PINNING

  • Pin the edges of your artificial turf with spiral galvanized spikes (5-7 pins per LF as needed)
  • Aim to position the pin so that it does not hold down any blades

STEP 6- SEAMING

  • Line up your pieces of artificial turf and roll out your seaming tape and cut to fit
  • Fold back both sides and lay the seam tape in the center of the seam ensuring there are no wrinkles. Use a spike to secure the tape to the base (so it stays put!) and apply a thin coat of adhesive glue working in sections.
  • Fold the turf over the seaming tape and glue to close up the seam and apply pressure. Wait at least 45 minutes to allow the glue time to set before moving on to the next step

STEP 7 - FINAL TOUCHES

  • Spread infill evenly over your artificial turf. You can do this by hand or with a drop spreader
  • Power broom your artificial turf to help settle the infill into the blades
  • Using a garden hose, give your artificial turf a spray down to remove any dust from the infill

MAINTENANCE

  • Do not use chemicals or products, other than those recommended for use on artificial turf
  • Assess infill annually and add as necessary.  Depending on the usage/traffic on the turf and or elements in your geographic region (wind, rain, etc), additional infill may need to be added. Adequate infill will ensure that turf fibers resist wear and tear and prevent the turf from moving which could result in creases or wrinkles over time.
  • Brush or broom the turf fibers in the opposite direction in high traffic areas periodically
  • Clean up spills promptly
